It was such a profound gift to watch you all climb mountains, to see your souls unveiled as you stepped into your confidence, and to watch you embody these teachings of love and acceptance.

Sometimes we just need a nervous system reset.

"FEELING WITH" VS "CARING FOR" | In a 2014 study,

"FEELING WITH" VS "CARING FOR" |

In a 2014 study, two sets of participants were taught either Empathy Training, or Compassion Training. They were then placed in an fMRI machine, while watching videos of people suffering, to see how their brains reacted.

Those who were taught Empathy Training pondered questions like "can you imagine what this person must be feeling? Can you imagine what it would feel like to be this person?"

Those who were taught Compassion Training viewed the videos of people suffering while cultivating a feeling of love for them, and wishing them well.

When the videos ended, they were asked to rate how they felt. The Empathy people felt worse. The Compassion people felt better.

And their brains revealed something fascinating.

For those practicing Empathy, there was increased activity in the anterior insula--the part of the brain associated with interoception, or the sense of "I feel this in my body." There was increased activity in the aMCC, a part of the brain that says "I feel bad," that activates when we feel threatened, stressed, and defensive.

And what's worse: these participants were more likely to LOOK AWAY from the videos of suffering. They couldn't take it anymore. Maybe you can relate, right now.

But those who practiced Compassion? Those who looked into the face of suffering and said "I love you. I care for you. I wish you well"? Increased activity in the ventral striatum (reward/motivation), mOFC (values and positivity), and pgACC, positive emotions. These are the same parts of the brain that light up when a parent looks at the face of their child. It's no wonder that the Sanskrit word for loving kindness is "Maitri"--it carries the name "Ma," the mother goddess.

Another study using similar methodology tested charitable giving after Compassion meditation, and found that it nearly doubled.
Compassion inspires positive action.

My favorite thing about our yoga retreats?

Connection ❤️ to the cultures that so graciously host and teach us, to the land, to each other, to ourselves.

This day, visiting the local village in Fiji, getting to see where our new friends grew up (in a tiny remote 150-person village), meeting their families, dancing and singing and even doing a little yoga together—it will stay with me forever. We find the divine through relationship with one another, by seeing the universe in every soul. That’s the yoga! I’m so grateful.
