1. Teaching a great 60-minute flow is one skill. But creating & delivering 200 hours’ worth of philosophy, anatomy, and spiritual lessons is a VASTLY different skill. Most yoga studios offer YTT for profitability, without the necessary skill-set to teach teachers.

2. Most teachers are not well-versed in anatomy, so they “outsource” the anatomy portion of the YTT, either to a prerecorded online course, or to an expert who guest-teaches a short module—a few isolated days of the training—where you’re expected to memorize every muscle and cram your head with technical terms. And then you never talk about anatomy again.

Anatomy should be so deeply integrated with learning the asana, that it’s taught every day, and immediately applied to the poses and integrated into the teaching. (“Here’s how the shoulder joint works, and HERE’S how that applies to chaturanga.”)

3. Likewise, how deeply do the teachers understand, explain, and LIVE the philosophy of yoga? Are they from, or have they immersed in, a culture to which yoga is indigenous? Or is it more white-washing and colonizing of an ancient spiritual practice? Yoga is not pilates, or stretching, or contortionism—if that’s what you’re seeking, do that! For thousands of years before “downward dog,” yoga was about connecting one’s soul to the divine. Will the training allow you to explore your soul, or just your body? Does it honor the roots?

4. Yoga is not one-size-fits-all. Krishnamacharya’s principle for teachers was “teach to the individual.” No set script or sequence could possibly benefit every age, body type, and mobility level that walks into your class. Find a YTT that allows you to use your own authentic voice to create customizable practices from a place of deep understanding and compassion.

5. Sri Desikachar was fond of saying, “a teacher is a friend, no more, no less.” Any teacher who claims to know the ONE way, the BEST way, the ONLY way, the TRUTH—or who claims to have spiritual or metaphysical abilities that you do not have, making what they “channeled” unquestionable to the student—is not someone to be trusted. Good teachers will lead you to the guru and the truth within yourself.

This YTT in Niantic will be the 53rd teacher training I’ve led, and I’ve trained more than 1,000 teachers worldwide. In that time, under the guidance of my teachers in India, my Hindu priestess in Bali, and various world-renowned yoga and anatomy masters, I’ve perfected the curriculum to ensure that every student who passes this course has a solid foundation of authentic yoga philosophy, self-experienced spirituality, and practical application of anatomy to teach CONFIDENTLY in their OWN voice and style—never a cookie cutter script to follow, not a set series to memorize—but the powerful ability to sequence and teach to any individual, exactly as they are.

The whole course is infused with the magic of Bali, through story-telling, ritual, and song—you will not find another YTT like it in this area. And rumor has it that my Bali co-teacher @thia_moana might be joining this summer, her first time in the US 😍
