Going Deep : What You’ll Learn

This is not only a YTT, but a spiritual pilgrimage to the sacred sites of Bali. We’ll dive deeper into all aspects of yoga, from the ancient philosophy and history, to the details of our body’s natural alignment in asana, to the spiritual depths reached through meditation. You’ll come out confident to teach advanced vinyasa asanas, tantric Hatha yoga, prenatal and postnatal yoga, children’s yoga, yin yogaayurveda, kirtan, and yoga nidra, with a deep understanding of the guiding sacred texts, and hands-on experience with yogic ritual and ceremony.

BREATHWORK, MEDITATION, & THE TANTRIC HATHA TEXTS
  • We’ll start with a deep-dive into Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, especially exploring its mysticism, as well as how it relates to teaching pranayama and meditation
  • Feel completely comfortable guiding powerful transformative breathwork sessions and breathwork workshops, with 10+ advanced pranayama techniques
  • Learn to weave those pranayama practices into asana for profound spiritual connection within the movement practice through breath and bandha
  • Learn to guide traditional meditation practices from both the Buddhist and Hindu traditions with confidence and grace
  • Then, we’ll dive deep into the tantric texts, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita, studying the original hatha asanas and mudras, before exploring what Krishnamacharya considered the most useful text, the Yoga Yajnavalkya
  • Experience hatha kriyas and how to appropriately apply them in modern times
  • Explore new understandings of mudras and bandhas and how they work with our energy
  • Master your knowledge of the vayus, koshas, and chakras, and gain deeper understanding of kundalini and how to work with rising energy.
ANATOMY, AYURVEDA, & TEACHING 1-ON-1 YOGA
  • During the second week, we’ll go deeper in our understanding of the systems of the body and how yoga can help rehabilitate injuries and illness
  • If you’ve felt like students often ask you specific questions about pain points in their bodies, and you haven’t known how to answer, this module will clear up the common issues experienced by students in yoga practices
  • Learn to teach to the individual and tailor private one-on-one yoga sessions specifically for the health and wellness of your client, to find greater comfort and peace in their body
  • Learn hands-on adjustments that are safe, comforting, and allow for the students’ inner wisdom and autonomy to reign supreme
  • Explore the business and ethical guidelines for maintaining private yoga clients, including intake and indemnity forms, marketing, and client retention.
  • Deepen your understanding of Ayurveda to prescribe yoga practices based on ayurvedic dosha.
  • Explore functional anatomy and anatomical differences to understand how alignment is rarely universal, in order to modify for your specific student and their specific body
ADVANCED ASANA & VINYASA SEQUENCING
  • Through this course, you’ll learn to listen to and understand your body on a deeper level, and to help your students connect with their own bodies in your asana class.
  • Experiment with creative vinyasa sequencing to help your students find grace and flow.
  • Learn to teach advanced asana, like hand balances and inversions and their modifications, in a way that is safe, incremental, and achievable for your students, without ego
  • Explore proprioceptive neuro-facilitated stretching and nerve flossing and how they can help your students increase their range of movement
  • We’ll emphasize functional movement and strength-building to balance flexibility, understanding that true mobility comes from muscles that are strong enough to support the stretch.
PRENATAL, POST-NATAL, & CHILDREN’S YOGA
  • Learn to safely teach prenatal yoga for all stages of pregnancy, as well as post-natal “baby-and-me” yoga, through a deep understanding of anatomy and the ways the body changes during pregnancy
  • Learn about common issues that may arise during pregnancy, and how to adapt the yoga practice for these concerns
  • Explore how the breath can support pregnancy, active labor, and bonding with the newborn, through breathwork and meditation practices tailored for this time of life.
  • Sequence fun and active kids’ yoga classes for different age groups by weaving storytelling and play into the practice
  • We’ll also explore ways to adapt a yoga practice for pre-teens and teens to help ease their transition into adulthood using yoga philosophy principles
  • Learn to market and reach clients in this specified area.
YIN YOGA
  • Learn to guide the slow and peaceful practice of yin yoga to settle your students into their parasympathetic nervous systems
  • We’ll explore the interweaving of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Yoga Asana that’s unique to yin yoga, discovering where Yin comes from, the 5 elements and how they impact your life and emotions, the anatomy and science of yin and Chinese Medicine, teaching techniques, and the principles and physiology behind the practice.
  • By the end of this module, you’ll be able to confidently teach over 20 different yin poses, which meridian lines they open, and how that influences the mind and emotions, in a peaceful, slow-moving practice–providing the perfect balance to the “yang” energy of vinyasa yoga.
  • We’ll also learn to confidently guide yoga nidra, the yoga of deep, non-sleep rest, for ultimate nourishment.
SPIRITUAL RITUAL & MANTRA CHANTING
  • Throughout the training, we’ll dive deep into spirituality and Hindu culture, visiting temples and experiencing ceremonies
  • Learn the stories of the gods for whom the yoga poses are named, their mantras and rituals, and how to weave their stories into your teachings.
  • We’ll experience sacred ceremonies, to deepen our understanding of the spirits of the land and the gods and goddesses that inspired our practice
  • Dive deep into the Bhagavad Gita and the knowledge of reincarnation and dharma
  • Learn how to play the harmonium and lead kirtan (mantra chanting)
  • Become a confidence space holder for sacred circles and ceremonies of your own

We’ll also be hosting business and marketing modules to help you learn how to book out your own destination yoga retreats, workshops, teacher trainings, and private clients, so that you have the tools you need to make a career with what you’ve learned.

Explore the Island with 3 LOCATIONS

MANGGIS | AN OCEANFRONT SHALA IN THE SECLUDED SNORKELING HAVEN

The first 10 days of the training will be in our oceanfront yoga shala in the village of Manggis on Bali’s east coast. Known for its crystal clear water and epic snorkeling just steps away from our rooms, we’ll practice daily to the sound of gentle waves.

Our yoga space in Manggis is a second-floor bamboo shala overlooking Mendira Bay, with sparkling water as far as the eye can see. Here, we’re steps away from the beach, and you can swim or snorkel during your breaks. Like stepping back in time to our ancestral roots, we’ll stay in traditional wooden bungalow style rooms, with all the comforts of home (air conditioning, hot water showers, and comfy beds!)
During the course, we’ll enjoy daily meditation on the beach.

SIDEMEN | THE SACRED VILLAGE IN THE MOUNTAINS

The next twelve days of our training will be in our happy place, the most spiritually powerful and naturally beautiful place we know– in the shadow of the sacred Mount Agung in the village of Sidemen (pronounced: see-duh-min). Our retreat center here is home to our Balinese priestess and spiritual teacher, Mama Ati, and we’ll be welcomed into traditional Balinese ceremonies and cleansing rituals right on site.

The sprawling gardens of our yoga home overlook the deep rice-field-terraced valleys of the sacred village, and our two yoga shalas both have stunning views. There’s a pool and delicious Indian restaurant to enjoy, as well as massage rooms tucked into the jungle.

Each room is equipped with open-air terrazzo bathtubs, air conditioning, and luxury beds. We feel so blessed to be able to call this place home, and can’t wait to welcome you.

UBUD | Explore the local spiritual scene

Our final week will be spent just outside of Ubud, at a gorgeous retreat center made up of individual villas scattered through the rice fields, with a large pool and restaurant for relaxing.

This retreat center will be our jumping off point for exploring all that the modern spiritual scene in Ubud has to offer, from sound healing, to temple visits, to kirtans and dance performances. We’ll experience a melukat water purification ceremony at one of Bali’s most beautiful natural waterfall temples, and even visit the monkeys in the sacred monkey temple of Sangeh.

Yogatrotter Bali
SACRED TEACHINGS
  • The Yoga you’ll be practicing will stay as close to the source of Yoga’s 8-limbs (as defined by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras) and the hatha/vinyasa tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya as possible. This means that classes will go much deeper than just the asana poses. Our focus is on “chitta vritti nirodha,” the quieting of the mind’s fluctuations, to allow you to find deep and lasting peace within yourself.
  • You will be guided by expert instructors as well as Indonesian spiritual teachers throughout the course to fully integrate the teachings of all aspects of yoga.
  • We strongly believe that not all of us learn our best just from listening to lectures, so you’ll have as much visual, kinesthetic, auditory, and hands-on in-the-moment learning experiences as possible to help you retain the maximum amount of information possible.
FOOD & ACCOMMODATION
  • One of our main goals is to help you integrate and experience Balinese culture, get to know the locals, and support the local community. We’ll travel to local temples and experience ceremonies from Balinese priests to help you see yoga through the eyes of the people who LIVE it every day.
  • All accommodation and three daily meals are provided during this training. We’ve learned that students can focus more on your studies when you aren’t concerned with where you’re going to eat next or rushing from far away hotels.
  • Our venue provides comfortable accommodation (in either single or shared rooms) with aircon, hot water, and swimming pool. Delicious vegetarian meals are provided three times a day, and we can work to meet any other dietary restrictions you may have.

MEGAN MULRINE SAUKULAK

Megan, the founder of Yogatrotter, is a yoga instructor at the E-RYT 500+ level who has trained more than 1,000 yoga teachers in Bali, Hawaii, and the mainland USA in all levels of YTT. She owns the Niantic Yoga Studio in Connecticut, USA, and has been running yoga teacher trainings full-time since 2016.

On her yoga journey, Megan spent three years in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, deepening her understanding of Buddhist philosophy and meditation practices while teaching yoga to Japanese locals, expats, and US Marines. During this time, she traveled to Bali, Thailand, and Cambodia to seek greater knowledge of eastern philosophies, and felt a deep past-life connection to Bali, the Island of the Gods, eventually moving there to lead trainings for a number of different yoga schools.

While in Bali, Megan has been studying Hindu philosophy and the ancient stories (puranas) as they relate to yoga with the priestess Bunda Parvati (Mama Ati), as well as continuing her studies of Buddhist meditation with the healer Pak Merta Ada. She traveled to India in 2019 to learn kirtan and Vedic mantra chanting at the Krishna School of Music in Rajasthan, and is currently working towards her certification in Yoga Therapy with Dr. Ganesh Mohan, A.G. and Indra Mohan, the leading yoga therapists in the Krishnamacharya lineage in India.

Megan is known for weaving stories and music throughout her teaching to connect students to their highest selves.

THIA MOANA

Moana is an E-RYT 500 teacher trainer who has been guiding students through yoga teacher trainings and yoga retreats in Bali for more than a decade. Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, Moana spends her time surfing, teaching yoga, and leading kirtan on Nusa Lembongan, a small white-sand island off the coast of Bali. The soul-level connection that she makes with students is often one of the most profound parts of the training.

Moana has spent over a decade teaching at many of Bali’s most popular yoga schools, and her yogic studies have brought her to India multiple times, including Rishikesh and Goa. She’s studied with many teachers in the lineage of Sri Krishnamacharya and has a dedicated daily practice of prayer.

A multi-instrument musician and singer, Moana’s expertise lies in mantra singing, meditation, movement, and hypnotherapy. Her voice frequently enables deep spiritual experiences for students during savasana, and her sense of humor and lightness brings joy to every moment of the course.

MAMA ATI

The Balinese Hindu mangku (priestess) Bunda Parvati (“Mama Ati”) hosts the sacred ceremonies we’ll attend throughout our training. As a follower of Amma, the hugging guru, Mama Ati radiates a similar energy of joy and loving kindness. Her blessings have been known to have a healing power, and she flawlessly translates the teachings of Balinese dharma into simple words that can be understand and felt by people of all cultural and religious backgrounds.

Mama Ati’s temple and home are right on the retreat center’s property, and we’ll experience both a fire ceremony and a water purification ceremony with her. She’s also available for spiritual counseling throughout our time in Sidemen.

WAYAN WYASA

Wayan is a renowned Balinese yoga philosophy teacher, energy healer, and founder of the Nuswantara Yoga Academy. Healing has always been a part of his family’s legacy, and though he recognized his potential to help others, it wasn’t until a Balinese High Priest acknowledged his talents that Wayan truly began his journey.

Immersing himself in learning, Wayan encountered his guru while studying the Education of Hindu Religion in Lombok. Under this guru’s mentorship, Wayan mastered the art of channeling his energy for healing. He deepened his understanding of metaphysical, ancestral, and natural energies. Wayan possesses the unique skill of scanning the physical body, reading its energy, and balancing chakras using both his intuition and his extraordinarily sensitive touch.

His quest for knowledge led him to India, where he delved into Ayurveda, yoga, energy work, and philosophy. Returning to Bali, Wayan earned a Masters in Philosophy and Science of Hindu Religion from Hindu University (UHN IGB Sugriwa Denpasar). His healing methods are a fusion of his passion and education, encompassing Yoga, Chakra Reading, and Hypnotherapy.

Wayan is a genuine healer, with a heart-driven desire to aid and heal others. Over 16 years, he has assisted more than 3,000 clients.
